This is another Nuclear Regulatory Commission WHOLESALE RULE CHANGE barreling toward us—THIS ONE is SNEAKY—BUT STOPPABLE!!
NRC published this rule-change as A DIRECT FINAL RULE and a PROPOSED RULE on Oct 5 2026
Direct Final Rules are for NONCONTROVERSIAL rule changes but THIS IS BEYOND CONTROVERSIAL—IT is one of the most commented-on and opposed rule—with laws and regulations and resolutions against it across the country and repeated defeats of efforts to clear or deregulate in the US. NRC is ignoring decades of public opposition to exempting nuclear waste and materials from regulatory control.

To make nuclear power and weapons, vast amounts of radioactive waste is generated—some staying radioactively dangerous for literally millions of years. To avert the costs of trying to isolate it for so long and to get out of liability for cancers and other health damage or contamination, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission along with Environmental Protection Agency, Dept of Energy and Dept of Transportation have tried to exempt some levels of radioactive materials and wastes from regulatory control. The public opposed every effort and we must do this again with this rule NRC 2025-1568.
But NRC claims this change will save a little over 1 million /yr! That is chump change to the nuclear industry and is less than the cost of cancer care for one child depending on the situation…Releasing undetermined amounts of plutonium and other radioactive elements could easily cause and accelerate many cancers and other health damage, far exceeding the tiny savings. There is no justification!
